Saints 2025 Year in Review: TE Treyton Welch missed opportunities

When head coach Kellen Moore was hired by the New Orleans Saints last February, it was thought that he would revamp a stagnant offense. While the Saints did show offensive improvements down the stretch of 2025, Moore wasn't able to make many personnel changes in free agency to the unit in free agency last offseason. One position that we did see a flurry of activity at the back half of the depth chart was at tight end, where Treyton Welch was among among a number of players who were added or promoted.

Tight end is a position that the Saints have mostly overlooked for several years. Even with Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau starting 2025 on the Physically Unable to Perform list, New Orleans did little of note to improve the position. Welch was one of the players expected to step up in their absence.

Treyton Welch Year in Review

  • Position: Tight End

  • Age: 25

  • Height: 6-feet, 4 inches

  • Weight: 240 pounds

  • NFL experience: 1 year

  • 2025 season: 3 games

Over the final two years of his collegiate career with the Wyoming Cowboys , Welch had 53 receptions for 616 yards and 7 touchdowns. He still did not get selected in the 2024 NFL draft, instead getting signed by the Cleveland Browns to an undrafted contract. Cleveland released Welch at the conclusion of the 2024 preseason, where he was subsequently added by New Orleans to their practice squad. He'd remain there all season without time on the active roster.

After the 2024 season, the Saints signed Welch to a reserve/future contract to again compete for a spot. He was again released, but promptly re-signed to the New Orleans practice squad. Welch was promoted to the active roster briefly early in the year and saw the first regular season action of his NFL career in Week 3 at Seattle . He'd be relegated back to the practice squad after that game, but would be promoted again before the end of the season.Welch was brought back to the active roster for the Saints final two games. In his three games last season, he'd play a total of 16 offensive snaps and 21 snaps on special teams. Welch was not targeted in the passing game and has yet to record an official NFL statistic.

It's telling that even with Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau unavailable to start the year, Welch or none of the other tight ends outside of Juwan Johnson made any kind of impact. Already this offseason, the Saints signed tight end Noah Fant in free agency. The addition reduces the chances of Welch and the others at the position of making the 2026 roster.
