The New Orleans Saints ' first preseason game of year went down to the wire, and although they were unable to get the victory, players around the roster had some great performances. But, due to this game being a loss, there were some very disappointing performances.
QB Spencer Rattler
Starting on offense, this had to be the most shocking performance of the game. Spencer Rattler won the QB competition last season, and although he was benched for Tyler Shough , his role was set as the high valued backup. Of course, the Saints still brought in competition this offseason, signing former first round pick Zach Wilson to a short term deal, but Rattler was still the favorite. No matter what, a position battle for that backup spot was underway as soon as camp started, and Rattler looked great since that point. Well, until the preseason game. Rattler opened up the game as the starter, and it was a bit shocking. His performance was very reminiscent to when he got benched against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Making dangerous throws, bad pocket presence, and turnovers. When Wilson came in, the offense looked much better, which is bad news for Rattler. It's too early to call, but Rattler will need to have a bounce back performance in the second preseason game.
K Charlie Smyth
The next player that had a disappointing day in New Orleans was kicker Charlie Smyth. Last season, Smyth was made the starter late and had some really great games that made the sense feel a bit more confident about their kicking game moving forward. There were some missed that needed to be fixed, but there was potential. Like the backup QB position, the Saints were always going to bring in competition for Smyth, and that was Tanner Brown . The Saints made an interesting decision by having Brown trot out there first for a field goal, and on the day, he went 2/2. It was a good day for Brown, but not for Smyth. He was able to make all of his extra points, but the one field goal attempt he had he missed, which were vital points in the end. Kicker evaluation is difficult, so every mistake will be remembered, and Smyth's bad start could seriously hurt his chances.
CBs Dalys Beanum and Isaac Yiadom
The last bad performance is from two players : Dalys Beanum and Isaac Yiadom. Both CBs are apart of the Saints depth in that position, but there struggles on Saturday may cost their chances of making the roster. Yiadom was a starter, and quickly, got outshined by Martin Emerson Jr. While Emerson Jr. made some big plays, Yiadom had some missed tackles and got targeted by the opposing offense. Then later in the game, we had Beanum's struggles. He made mistakes on both defense and special teams, and they were potentially enough to cost the Saints the game.
