Sami Zayn made sure he stayed in the middle of the Undisputed WWE Championship picture on the September 4 episode of WWE SmackDown . After spending most of the night demanding another title opportunity, Zayn interfered in CM Punk's championship defense against Johnny Gargano.
The night began with Gunther looking for Sami Zayn. Zayn eventually came out from the crowd and argued that he had been robbed of the Undisputed WWE Championship. He also went after CM Punk, calling him an arrogant snake while presenting himself as the real working-class hero. He demanded another chance to win back what he believed had been taken from him.
Zayn even said there would be no number one contender matches until he got his own opportunity.
Just then, Finn Bálor interrupted and said he wanted to get his hands on Zayn too. The former WWE Champion escaped into the ring, but Kevin Owens soon joined the chase. Gunther also got involved, creating even more tension around Zayn.
Later in the night, CM Punk was talking to Nick Aldis about the number one contender situation when he spotted Johnny Gargano.
Punk praised Gargano and reminded everyone of his "Johnny Wrestling" reputation and status as Cleveland's favorite son. He then offered Gargano a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Gargano initially looked hesitant, but Candice LeRae encouraged him to take the opportunity. Gargano eventually accepted Punk's challenge.
Before the match, Zayn also approached Gargano backstage. He told Gargano that if an opportunity came his way, he should take it. However, he also told Gargano that he better put him first if he defeated Punk.
In the main event match, Gargano gave Punk a tough challenge. The challenger survived several big moves and came close to becoming the new Undisputed WWE Champion.
After Gargano hit a superkick and later connected with a slingshot spear, he nearly scored the biggest win of his career. Punk answered with a Blue Thunder Bomb, but Gargano kept fighting.
The match's dynamic changed when Sami Zayn appeared.

Punk immediately attacked Zayn, but Zayn entered the ring and distracted the referee. This allowed Candice LeRae to hit a hurricanrana on Punk.
The chaos continued outside the ring. Zayn grabbed the championship belt, but Kevin Owens attacked him. Gunther then entered and took down Owens before confronting Zayn. Bálor also joined the action and hit Gunther with a Sling Blade.
Zayn eventually used the championship belt as a weapon against Bálor, Gunther, and Owens.
Back inside the ring, Punk hit Gargano with the GTS. LeRae distracted the referee again, allowing Zayn to hit Punk with the title belt. Gargano nearly took advantage, but Zayn was eventually sent backstage.
Punk then hit Gargano with another GTS and got the three-count.
After the match, Zayn continued arguing with Nick Aldis on the entrance ramp. However, Punk grabbed a microphone and challenged Zayn to face him for the Undisputed WWE Championship next week in Mexico City.
