Cincinnati has watched Chase Brown grind for 3.5 yards a carry while Joe Burrow carries the offense, and a 2-5 start in Philadelphia has put Saquon Barkley's name in trade deadline talks with the Nov. 10 cutoff closing in. Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr pitched a Barkley deal to the Bengals this week, arguing Barkley and Brown on the field together would force defenses into heavier personnel and pull help away from Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
Barkley wasn't sounding like a player with one foot out the door last week. "The NFC East is asking for someone to take over," Barkley said Oct. 22, per PennLive's Johnny McGonigal . "Even with all the crazy injuries and everything that's happened, we still have a lot of talent."
Four days later, the Cowboys beat the Eagles 38-21 on Monday night. Barkley lasted 10 snaps before leaving with a lower back injury, still turning nine touches into 71 yards and a touchdown in his first game back from a hamstring injury that cost him two games.
Barkley and Chase Brown would force heavier personnel

Orr's idea leans on the league's growing use of two-back sets. Put Barkley and Brown in the same backfield, and defenses have to answer with bigger bodies, which shaves off the extra safety help that usually drifts toward Chase and Higgins. Orr also sees Barkley as "a dangerous checkdown weapon" for Burrow.
The rushing numbers back up the need. Brown ranks 33rd of 44 qualifying running backs in yards per carry and 33rd in yards after contact per attempt (2.54), according to PFF . Barkley, in a much smaller 43-carry sample, is second in yards per carry (5.7) and third in yards after contact per attempt (3.81), with a 77.5 PFF rushing grade to Brown's 67.7.
The receiving side flips the script. Brown has caught 28 of his 29 targets, fifth among running backs per PFF, while Barkley has six catches for 17 yards. Brown would likely keep the passing-down work, and Barkley would take the early-down carries Brown has struggled to turn into chunks.
Cincinnati's tight end room adds another reason to look at two-back looks. Erick All Jr. is on injured reserve with a feared torn ACL , Tanner Hudson was already on IR and rookie Jack Endries is the only dual-threat backup left. There's a counterargument, too. Zac Taylor's offense exploded in that 35-point second half in Baltimore with Burrow working out of the shotgun , and more bodies in the backfield pull against what's working.

The money is the easy part this season. Barkley is owed about $867,000 for the rest of 2026, then $16 million in 2027 with $2.5 million fully guaranteed, per ESPN's Bill Barnwell . Barnwell's own Barkley pitch sent him to the Vikings for a conditional 2027 third-round pick, a useful benchmark for what the Eagles could expect.
The risk is the body. Barkley turns 30 in February, and his back injury lands on top of the hamstring that kept him out of Weeks 5 and 6.
Brown, meanwhile, reclaimed the backfield in Baltimore with 40 of 53 snaps, and he posted an 85.8 PFF pass-blocking grade on eight pass-block snaps. That's a tiny sample, but it matters for a pairing in which Brown would be asked to protect Burrow more often.
The Bengals (4-2) host the 1-6 Titans on Sunday to open the NFL's easiest remaining schedule , while Barkley's Eagles visit the Commanders on Sunday night. A Cincinnati team coming off a 35-13 win doesn't need a running back to make the playoffs. Whether it needs one to beat a January defense that can take away Chase and Higgins is the question the front office has 12 days to answer.
