- SDSU football: Jackrabbits outlast Penguins
Sep. 19—BROOKINGS — South Dakota State won a big game and may have lost their star quarterback.
The 2nd-ranked Jackrabbits held off No. 9 Youngstown State 27-20 in front of 18,541 fans at Dana J. Dykhose Stadium on Saturday, securing one of the biggest wins in the FCS so far this season, but quarterback Chase Mason left the game with an apparent knee injury just before halftime and did not return. His status will be evaluated.
Before he went down Mason was having one of his best games, completing 9-of-13 throws for 137 yards and rushing for 45 and a touchdown, and after he went down the Jacks leaned heavily on a running game that was dominant all game long.
Josiah Johnson rushed for a career-high 238 yards and two touchdowns and the Jacks totaled 309 yards on the ground as a team.
He's the first Rabbit to rush for over 200 yards since Isaiah Davis in 2021 and the first to carry 30-plus times in a game since Zach Zenner in 2014.
Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard kept the Penguins in the game, and they kicked a field goal on 1st down with two minutes left to make it a one-score game in hopes of getting it back to tie, but the Jacks recovered the ensuing onside kick and put the game away.
