- SDSU football: Jackrabbits rebound with win over Murray State
Oct. 24—BROOKINGS — South Dakota State bounced back from their first FCS loss of the season appropriately, taking care of Murray State 42-9 in front of 19,302 Hobo Day fans at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
Josiah Johnson rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns and Chase Mason completed 18-of-26 throws for 197 yards and no turnovers as SDSU led for the duration.
The 5th-ranked Jackrabbits were coming off a deflating road loss to North Dakota that knocked them from the top spot in the FCS rankings.
With the win, SDSU (6-2, 3-1) can look ahead to their rivalry showdown with the USD Coyotes next week in Brookings. The Coyotes beat North Dakota 26-23 in overtime on Saturday in the DakotaDome.
SDSU took a 14-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown run by Johnson and 18-yard touchdown pass from Mason to Grahm Goering in the first quarter, then used two Tristan Alvano field goals and a 4-yard James Basinger touchdown run to make it 27-6. Murray State then got a 51-yard field goal from Tyler Dorn to make it 27-9 at the half.
Josh Holst connected with Andrew Gustad on a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring for the Jacks.
Cullen McShane led the SDSU defense with 10 tackles. Logan Green, Jace Sifore and Carter Sitzman all had sacks.
Dorn hit three field goals for the Racers, who fall to 1-7 and 0-4 in the Valley.
