The Seattle Seahawks re-signed safety AJ Finley right as the new league year began on Wednesday.
SportsTrust Advisors made the following post at 1:03 p.m. PST, three minutes after the official start of the NFL's new league year. The team officially announced it later in the afternoon.
Finley missed all of the 2025 season with a knee injury, but it seems the team liked him enough to keep him around for a more substantial on-field opportunity. They claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers in November 2024. He appeared in four games for Seattle down the stretch that year. Before that, he played in 22 games in the year and a half he spent with the Chargers.
Finley was an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss in 2023 but seen as a quality special teams prospect . He also recorded eight interceptions as a three-year starter in college. Lance Zierlein believed in his frame and length at the NFL level, but worried about his speed and quickness. He had the ball skills and anticipation coming out of college, but not the tackling. A lanky safety who takes the ball away but doesn't have the speed is a prototype scouts will typically be cautious with at the next level, moving from high school to college or college to the professional ranks.
Finley's found a way to stick around in spite of his lesser prospect pedigree and injury history- for which the best explanation is usually a positive, team-first presence. Whatever the reason might be, he'll have another opportunity to prove himself with the Seahawks in 2026.
