The Denver Broncos and the sports world was shocked when head coach Sean Payton announced the season-ending injury of Bo Nix after Saturday's playoff win over the Buffalo Bills .
In nearly the same breath when telling media about Nix, Payton expressed extreme confidence in backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham . "Stiddy's ready to go," said Payton in his second appearance of the night. "Stiddy's ready, and we'll be ready for the next challenge."
Later on in his remarks, Payton again gave Stidham, who has been with the Broncos since 2023, his utmost confidence. "I've said this at the beginning of the season, I feel like I have a [No.] 2 [quarterback] that's capable of starting for a handful of, a number of teams," Payton said. "I know he feels the same way. So watch out. Just watch."
In a conference call with media members on Sunday, Payton continued to back Stidham. "One of 'Stiddy's' great strengths is his mental aptitude and his progressions in understanding plays," said Payton. "There'd be practices where I'm looking at Vance [Joseph], like getting pissed off because 'Stiddy' is making our defense look bad. He's very accurate. He has a lot to his ball."
Stidham briefly appeared during the Russell Wilson era, stepping in when the veteran was benched for the final two games of the 2023 season (Stidham went 1-1 as a starter). Stidham also competed with Nix for the starting job in 2024 before Nix eventually won the role. Stidham and Nix have become fast friends, and the team will surely rally around "Stiddy" before the biggest game of his career, the AFC championship game next week.
