Injury news in the NFL is always tough to handle, and even more so when it happens in training camp.
When Denver Broncos defensive lineman Matt Henningsen went down and was carted off during last Friday's practice , it took a couple of days for Broncos coach Sean Payton to react to the devastating news; Payton had departed Friday's practice to participate in Hall of Famer Drew Brees' enshrinement in Canton, Ohio.
Henningsen, exactly one year to the day after rupturing his Achilles in a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers in 2025, ruptured the Achilles in his other foot last week.
"Gosh, it's tough, especially coming off (last year's injury)," Payton told reporters on Monday. "Everyone's got a different journey, and it's filled with road bumps and he's pretty tough. I hate it for him because of how it happened and yet, you put your arm around him and give him support."
Henningsen faces another long recovery ahead, but for now, his 2026 season is over.
The Broncos will have one final practice ( closed to the public ) on Wednesday before departing to Georgia, where they will face the Atlanta Falcons in their first preseason contest on Friday.
