Seattle Mariners Get Positive Injury Update on Necessary Roster Piece
The Seattle Mariners received some disappointing injury news on Thursday morning, as it was revealed that Cal Raleigh is now on the injured list for the first time in his career.
However, there was better news in the afternoon, as Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reported that reliever Matt Brash is slated for a rehab assignment on Thursday at Triple-A Tacoma.
Brash has been on the injured list since after his appearance on April 28 against the Minnesota Twins . He's had right lat inflammation. As noted by Jude, he's also had 14 consecutive scoreless appearances to begin the season out of the bullpen.
Now 27 years old, Brash is one of the top set up men in the American League. He is 16-11 lifetime with a 3.10 ERA. He led baseball in appearances (78) in 2023 before missing all of 2024 with Tommy John surgery. He returned after a about a month in 2025 and was a key cog in getting the Mariners to the American League Championship Series.
Brash isn't the only key piece of the bullpen missing for Seattle , as Gabe Speier is also on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation. The M's bullpen has been thin for about two weeks and is doing all it can to keep things together.
New arms like Alex Hoppe have emerged as intriguing options and Cooper Criswell has moved into a leverage position, continuously gaining more trust from manager Dan Wilson.
There's no word yet on Brash's timeline for return to Seattle. If he throws well and comes out of Thursday's game physically fine, there's a chance he could be activated in time for Friday's game against the San Diego Padres .
But it seems more likely that the M's let him pitch Thursday and then give him at least a day to recover, making Saturday more likely for his return. It's also possible that the Mariners want Brash to get a second appearance under his belt, which would mean he probably won't be activated until the weekend is over, but one step at a time: The team just has to make sure that he comes out of Thursday's appearance OK.
In addition to Brash, outfielder Victor Robles is currently playing at Tacoma as well. He's 4-for-26 on his rehab assignment (.154) with an RBI and two stolen bases.
The Mariners return home to take on the Padres on Friday night at 6:40 p.m. PT. The Rainiers will play at 7:05 p.m. PT on Thursday.
