The Seattle Seahawks didn't mind letting Riq Woolen leave in free agency because his replacement was already in the building. Josh Jobe looked like just another member of their elite Dark Side defense.
Jobe went from a roster-bubble guy to signing a three-year, $24 million deal with the Seahawks. But after watching him struggle so mightily in the loss to the San Francisco 49ers, that doesn't look like a bargain anymore.
And, given how the Seahawks have handled the cornerback position dating back to this offseason, it looks like his starting spot might not be guaranteed anymore. After Week 5, at least, that shouldn't be the case.
Jobe just let Brock Purdy do whatever he wanted. He gave up six receptions on nine targets for 98 yards, a touchdown, 10 yards after the catch, and a 140.0 passer rating. He just couldn't stop Mike Evans.
Notably, he can't ignore the fact that the Seahawks just signed Trevon Diggs off the practice squad. He wasn't active in this game, but he's been in the building for a while, learning the playbook and whatnot.
The Seahawks shuffled their cornerback room multiple times in the offseason, even adding Terrion Arnold to the mix despite his legal turmoil. That's not how a team that trusts its current corps of players operates.
Jobe has become a fan favorite and has earned his stripes in Seattle. He's a former practice-squad guy who turned a solid half-season into a $1.2 million contract to return last season. He then got even more money and long-term security.
That said, this player hasn't been the same hungry Josh Jobe who made a name for himself with his physicality against the run and his mistake-free play. Not flashy, not spectacular, but someone who just got the job done.
The Seahawks still have one of the sturdiest, most dynamic defenses in the game, but that only makes his performance even less acceptable. There are no guarantees here, and no one's job should be safe.
Nehemiah Pritchett is playing well, Trevon Diggs' presence looms large, and who knows what will happen with Arnold. Whatever the case, this team has proven they're not afraid to make moves to get the CB room where they want it to be. Maybe they still have another trade/signing in them.
It's still early in the season, and maybe this is just recency bias after his worst performance of the young campaign. But unless Jobe turns things around soon, the Seahawks must have a serious conversation about replacing him.
