Seventh round pick Quinn Ewers in line for Dolphins backup QB job
As a seventh-round pick out of Texas in the 2025 NFL Draft, Miami Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers was not expected to play during his rookie season. After incumbant QB1 Tua Tagovailoa got benched, Ewers didn't just play, he started three games, and posted an 85.5 passer rating. The Phins went 1-2 in his three starts.
His passer rating was good for third best among rookie QBs, as he tossed three touchdown passes, along with three interceptions, as he passed for 622 yards while completing 66.3% of his passes.
When Tagovailoa ( who is now joining the Atlanta Falcons ) was released, the only quarterbacks in the picture for Miami roster were, momentarily, Ewers and Cam Miller . Green Bay Packers backup Malik Willis was brought in to be the new starter, but at some point, at least one other quarterback will take a significant amount of meaningful reps.
That's just the nature of a given football season. Also, Willis enters his fifth NFL season, on his third team, with only 155 career pass attempts. While it was obvious that Tua had worn out his welcome in Miami, and change was needed, Willis is a major question mark.
Overall, it's just a risky proposition, and if Willis doesn't work out, then it is most likely Ewers, not Miller, who is up next.
For a guy who was selected 231st overall, it's a very interesting and utterly unexpected scenario.
