All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder clinched the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference standings on Wednesday. After a 128-110 win against the LA Clippers, the Thunder clinched the top seed for the third year in a row.
After the win, Gilgeous-Alexander addressed the impressive accomplishment , as the Thunder, for the third consecutive season, will enter the playoffs with the best record in the Western Conference.
"It's impressive," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Obviously, none of it means anything if you don't win in the end, and you know that. But teams that win in the end have some of the same characteristics and traits, and check off the same boxes. So, checking off those boxes is kind of just like knowing we're headed in the right direction.
"Obviously, we're far from the finish line of where we want to go, but like I said, it lets us know we're heading right there."
Guiding the Thunder to a 24-1 start, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault says the most difficult part of the regular season came in the middle, as Oklahoma City did its best to navigate the schedule amid injuries and setbacks , he said, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.
"It's a great accomplishment," Daigneault said. "No two seasons are the same, and this season was a lot of different experiences. We obviously started really hot and then dealt with a lot of missed games, especially in the middle of the season. We felt like [for] two months, we were enduring that. And this team, when you win the championship, that kind of hangs over you as a team the next year. Meaning everybody, including themselves, you judge yourself against that."
The Thunder improved to 64-16.

Lakers All-Star LeBron James revealed his pick for MVP this season, and it isn't his teammate Luka Doncic. For James, this year's MVP award belongs to Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, he said, per The Mind of The Game podcast.
"My favorite for MVP is Shai," James said. "For him to play on the perimeter as much as he does, playing at midrange as much as he does & still be as super efficient as he is. It's Jordan-esque."
With two games left in the regular season, the Thunder will look to finish with 66 regular-season wins, which is two wins shy of last season's 66-16 finish.
