The New York Giants are navigating the 2026 season with a 4-2-1 record through seven games, sitting atop the NFC East. That recovery follows a difficult 2025 campaign in which they finished at the bottom of the division with a 5-12 record. Despite this competitive turnaround, the team remains focused on internal discipline rather than external expectations.
Head coach John Harbaugh has dismissed talk of the Giants as division favorites. The team is treating every upcoming snap and game as a separate task, with 10 games left and the NFC East still unsettled.
New York Giants coach John Harbaugh rejects division favorite talk
Harbaugh was asked about the Giants' place atop the division and whether their position had changed. He said labels have no value to the team and warned that any thought of complacency would violate the standard he expects.

"In this league, to even think for one second that something's not going to be a challenge or that you might get complacent or that it might not-what would even be on your mind if you thought that?" Harbaugh said in a statement shared by the SNY Giants, "I believe that, when you get asked that, if you're the right kind of team, it's just like, really, you're asking me that? Shame on us if we would think that way, and we're not thinking that way."
The Giants hired Harbaugh on January 20, 2026, making him the 21st head coach in franchise history. He arrived after 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, where he won Super Bowl XLVII, six division titles and 12 playoff berths.
Harbaugh's Baltimore teams went 180-113 in the regular season. He also owns 13 postseason victories and eight road playoff wins , the most by an NFL head coach. Translating that historical standard to a rebuilding franchise remains the immediate challenge for New York's new coaching staff.
The 2025 Giants finished 5-12 and last in the NFC East. The current record represents progress, but the division remains close enough for one poor stretch to change the standings. Harbaugh's message keeps the focus on preparation, not the table.
The Giants entered Week 9 at 4-2-1, according to the team's official update, and were set to visit the Philadelphia Eagles, who were 2-6. New York's next games against NFC East opponents will carry direct value in the standings.
A recent Giants report on Harbaugh's approach to the division detailed his view that the team must spend more time on its own opponent than on rivals' results. With the division race tightening, Harbaugh's strict week-to-week focus remains the ultimate safeguard against outside noise.
