It's hard to imagine how a relationship that began with so much promise and had so much potential for greatness could end up so toxic. However, that was precisely how things had gotten between former Los Angeles Lakers legends Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant .
While some believed that Shaq's trade to the Miami Heat in July 2004 would temper the raging inferno between him and Kobe, the exact opposite happened. In fact, things went south so badly that Kobe aired out Shaq's dirty laundry for all the world to know about.
Should have done what Shaq used to do
The relationship between Shaq and Kobe was already on shaky ground, primarily because of their contrasting approaches to basketball. While the 7'1" behemoth coasted, relying mainly on his sheer strength, size and athleticism, Kobe's hunger for improvement was insatiable. No matter how great he got, how many individual accolades or trophies were on his mantle, he never had it in him to be content—setting the stage for many arguments between him and Shaq.
And then, of course, there was the eternal argument over who the man really was on the Lakers, especially during their rampage in the early 2000s, in which they won three straight NBA titles, running roughshod over any team that stood in their path. However, the two went their separate ways during the 2004 offseason when Kobe had the Lakers to himself after the big man was traded to the Heat.
But that didn't put out the fire. As Kobe faced his legal troubles in Colorado, he told police he should have handled the matter more discreetly, using his substantial wealth to keep it under wraps.
"Bryant commented to us about what another teammate does in situations like these," Det. Doug Winters wrote in his report. "Bryant stated he should have done what Shaq does. Bryant stated that Shaq would pay his women not to say anything. He stated that Shaq has paid up to a million dollars already for situations like this."
"He stated he, Bryant, treats a woman with respect, therefore they shouldn't say anything."
A ridiculous claim
Not long after being told of Kobe's claims, Shaq was beside himself. For one, he said that he and Kobe never spent any time together outside of the four corners of the hardwood floor, so how can he make such comments?
"This whole situation is ridiculous. I never hang out with Kobe; I never hung around him. In the seven or eight years we were together, we were never together," Shaq contended . "So how this guy can think he knows anything about me or my business is funny. And one last thing: I'm not the one buying love. He's the one buying love."
Shaq's parting shot was especially pointed as he was referring to the extravagant, custom-designed, 8-carat purple diamond ring that Kobe bought for his wife, Vanessa, not long after the rape allegations surfaced.
While Shaq and Kobe eventually mended fences after they retired from the NBA, hoop fans cannot help but think about what could have been had the two been on the same page all those years.
