Charles Barkley could not have thrived among giants without one of his unique physical gifts: his powerful legs. As an undersized power forward, those gifts proved essential for him to make a mark in a league dominated by big men who took pride in their strength, physicality, and aggression.
By 1993, he was using that power to go toe-to-toe with the NBA's superstars, including Michael Jordan. Chuck's dominance, especially in the paint, became a familiar problem for his opponents.
However, once he stepped out of the arena and went about his normal life, those massive legs looked freakish to the common person. A masseuse who had Barkley as his client in the early 90s could attest to that.
The massage therapist had treated NBA clients before, particularly Stanley Roberts, the Los Angeles Clippers ' 7'0" center. However, rubbing the Chuckster's lower body proved unforgettable, leaving her in disbelief.
"She's rubbed some NBA legs, she says, but none like Barkley's," an article in the 1993 issue of "Playboy Magazine" recounted . "'Charles' thighs are as big as Stanley Roberts…' But Stanley's are like mush. Charles' legs are like rock.'"
Barkley's legs were no accident
Since his high school years in Leeds, Alabama, Barkley had never been the tallest player on his team. In his junior year, he was Leeds High School's "chubby" 5'10" backup point guard, a position he knew was not for him, weighing 202 pounds.
"As short as I am, big guys don't want to get out on the floor and be moving around, " he said .
Then, in the summer of his senior year, he had a significant growth spurt that transformed him into a 6'4" forward. However, Barkley knew his height and weight would not be enough to make it into the big leagues. So he worked on his legs.
But with Leeds lacking gym facilities, Charles had to make the most out of the training tool he had available back then: his humble fence.
"I jumped [over] my fence at the house, just getting my legs stronger," Barkley recalled . "I had to have tremendous leg strength, yeah, because I've always said, like physically, my legs were comparable to anybody anywhere…we didn't have no big weight rooms in Leeds."
His unconventional training method paid off. It equipped Barkley with explosiveness and quickness that were rare for a guy of his size. And by the later stages of his high school career, he had shown enough that college scouts could not ignore his talent. Charles ended up playing for Auburn University.
"Jumping that fence kept having my explosiveness, really helped build my a— up, to be honest with you," he said. "I had tremendous quads, but man, just getting my legs strong as possible was huge."
Sir Charles put those legs to good use
With his strong legs, the Phoenix Suns legend went on to have a 16-year Hall of Fame career. Despite standing at 6'4", he became one of the greatest power forwards the game has ever seen, averaging 22.1 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He was virtually unguardable in his prime – and he knew it .
"Can't nobody on the planet guard me, " Barkley once said. "If I were 7 feet tall, I'd be illegal in 3 states."
That dominance was rooted in his leg strength. It allowed Barkley to turn rebounding into one of his best weapons. He became both an unstoppable force and an immovable object inside the paint. Chuck was also quick on his feet, running the floor like a guard, as if he did not weigh 252 pounds.
Barkley carved out a legendary resume highlighted by an MVP award, 11 All-Star selections and 11 All-NBA nods. He was named to the 50th and 75th-Anniversary Teams, cementing his status as an all-time great.
However, the tall and attractive masseuse who massaged Barkley was probably not aware of such basketball greatness. All she knew was that Charles' thighs felt as hard as a rock, and that's what all she'd remember.
