Shohei Ohtani reaching the top of MLB’s Pitcher Power Rankings was always going to draw attention, but the reaction that followed shows just how difficult it is to place him in any traditional category.
The two-way superstar continues to dominate in ways the sport rarely sees, excelling on the mound while still producing at an elite level as a hitter.
That dual impact makes achievements like this feel deserved, yet at the same time, it complicates how fans compare him to pitchers who focus solely on one role.
That tension is exactly what surfaced after the rankings dropped. Because with Ohtani, the conversation never stays simple for long.

As shared via MLB on X , Ohtani claimed the top spot in the latest update.
“Shohei Ohtani is atop the Pitcher Power Rankings for the first time this season,” the MLB revealed.
The recognition comes during a strong run on the mound, where Ohtani has combined control, strikeout ability and consistency.
What makes it stand out even more is that he continues to do all of this while remaining one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball, a combination that no other player currently offers.
Still, rankings rarely exist without debate, especially when they involve a player who does not fit the usual mold.
The reaction from fans reflected both admiration and frustration, often within the same conversation.
One fan summed up the general feeling by saying, “Shohei Ohtani being #1 pitcher and still casually being one of the best hitters in baseball is just unfair,” highlighting how his dominance almost feels unrealistic.
Others focused more on the rest of the rankings, questioning how certain pitchers were placed. “How the heck is Paul Mfer Skenes 6th,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Dawg, are we serious? Where is Davis Martin ?” As frustration began to shift toward perceived omissions.
The absence of Davis Martin, in particular, drew stronger criticism, with one comment stating, “Any list without Davis Martin right now is objectively TRASH,” showing how quickly rankings can turn into debates about recognition and respect.
At the same time, some reactions simply embraced the uniqueness of Ohtani’s position in the sport, with one fan writing, “And that is a Unicorn for you,” a reminder that what he is doing continues to stand apart from anything else in baseball.
Together, the responses highlight a familiar pattern, where Ohtani’s excellence is widely accepted, but everything around it remains open to debate.
