Deni Avdija had a breakout year in the NBA. He was named to his first-ever All-Star Game, and many think he is expected to be a cornerstone for the Portland Trail Blazers in the years to come.
His increased production could have been of good use for his national team. However, he is not there for them in the ongoing FIBA World Qualifiers. For that, he is being criticized by Israeli fans.
Avdija came across the criticisms and harsh words directed toward him, and he is now explaining himself .
He first clarified that it is his desire to join his teammates for international duties. He also addressed those who are doubting his dedication and commitment to the national team, citing the times he had to play through injuries.
"When you represent a country, and there are expectations of you, that's part of it, and I accept that. But one thing I'm not willing to have questioned is my commitment to the national team and my country," he said.
What made it different this time? Avdija said the Blazers gave him some advice. He needs to look out for his career and future.

"This time, I wanted to be there just as much. But this summer I dealt with a complex back injury," he continued.
"An injury that those who haven't gone through it really can't understand what it demands, and the decision not to participate in this window wasn't one I made alone. Portland wasn't willing to take a risk with my health, and in the situation that arose, I simply didn't have the option to step up and play."
Avdija's presence for Israel would have not made a difference. They were already eliminated in the 2027 basketball event as they sit in sixth place in Group K. They are five points behind the third spot that will automatically send them to the World Cup.
As for his NBA career, the Blazers are looking to build up on their successful 2026-27 season wherein Avdija was their top scorer.

They are going to have Damian Lillard back after sitting out the last season to recover from ACL injury. They also traded for Ja Morant with the Memphis Grizzlies , giving them one of the deepest backcourt in the league.
Former NBA players turned podcast hosts Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes think Avdija is the Blazers first option now when it comes to offense even if they have Morant and Lillard.
