Ahmaad Moses was supposed to be done at SMU .

Then again … pretty much everything about the last six months has changed.

Moses left the Hilltop after the best season of his college career, accepted an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine and began preparing for the next stage of his football career.

Now, his unlikely path back to SMU has taken another major turn.

Moses is among the athletes covered by a temporary restraining order signed Thursday by Dallas County District Court Judge Martin Hoffman, temporarily preventing the NCAA, SEC and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey from enforcing eligibility rules that would block the covered athletes from returning for another college season.

For Moses, that's significant.

It just doesn't necessarily mean he'll be lining up in SMU's secondary when the season begins.

Considering how Moses got here, even reaching this point is pretty remarkable.

The former Mustangs safety was coming off the best season of his college career when he entered the 2026 NFL Draft process. He recorded 104 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack and five interceptions in 13 games as SMU finished 9-4.

His professional plans changed at the combine.

An MRI revealed a herniated disc, eventually leading Moses to undergo spinal fusion surgery. He went undrafted before receiving medical clearance and working out for the New York Giants in July.

At that point, another season at SMU wasn't exactly supposed to be part of the equation.

Then college football's eligibility rules started changing.

The NCAA adopted a new model allowing incoming athletes five seasons of competition within a five-year window, but players whose eligibility expired after the 2025 season weren't automatically given another year.

That distinction has sent players to court.

Moses has been among those trying to return, and Thursday's order moved that fight in his favor at the NCAA level.

The order lasts 14 days, with another hearing scheduled for Sept. 11.

There's another complication, too.

The ACC adopted a separate rule Thursday prohibiting member schools from rostering certain athletes who previously entered the professional process, including players who declared for the NFL Draft without withdrawing in accordance with NCAA requirements to retain eligibility.

That creates another potential obstacle for Moses even after Thursday's court victory — and the ACC isn't among the defendants restrained by Hoffman's order.

So no … SMU can't simply pencil Moses back into the starting secondary yet.

But it's pretty easy to understand why the Mustangs would want him there.

Moses led SMU with 104 tackles last season, intercepted five passes and recovered two fumbles while putting together the best season of his college career.

SMU entered the offseason expecting to replace that production.

Now, there's at least a legal path for Moses to try to get it back.

A back injury interrupted his path to the pros. A new NCAA eligibility model created another possible route to college football. Courtrooms and conference rules are now helping determine whether that route actually leads back onto the field.

That's a pretty strange way to potentially get another season at SMU. For Moses, it might be the only one left.
