FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas coach Ryan Silverfield has talked plenty this offseason about the ongoing starting quarterback battle, Khmori House's move from linebacker to STAR (nickelback) and how active his defensive front it.
But there's one spot that fans have been concerned about for plenty of years and that's safety. Even Silverfield will admit that he hasn't spent time talking about one player who deserves more attention and that is Cincinnati transfer safety Christian Harrison.
"Then Christian Harrison. Man, I'm telling you right now, I think you guys are going to sit there and say, and shame on me, you're going to say, "Coach, you didn't talk enough about Christian Harrison," Silverfield said Sunday.
He continued by offering a strong endorsement of Harrison, who could be a major factor in flipping previous results of Arkansas' defense this fall.
"Because he is, I think he has a chance to be the heartbeat of our defense with some of the stuff he can do," Silverfield said. "He's smart. He's savvy. Obviously, he comes from a great lineage. Man, I've been pleased."
After starting his career at Tennessee , he transferred to Cincinnati for the 2025 season and enjoyed a breakout campaign by recording 66 tackles, seven pass breakups, 2.5 tackles for loss, and an interception.
Harrison's family lineage needs little introduction as his father, Rodney, spent 15 seasons with the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots and developed a reputation as one of the most physical defensive backs to play in the NFL.
Now, it's notable that Silverfield's first description of Harrison wasn't about his size, speed or even physicality. It all comes down to his football intelligence, which is a major reason that he has given up just one career touchdown across 577 coverage snaps in his career, according to Pro Football Focus .
As a college veteran, being the "heartbeat" of a defense doesn't necessarily mean leading the team in tackles, interceptions or highlight-reel hits. But sometimes it's just about being at the right place at the right time on the back end of a defense that has so many new faces, especially in the secondary.
Harrison's experience in two different leagues, including some for the Volunteers could become valuable for first-year defensive coordinator Ron Roberts. Arkansas has spent so much time installing its new defense scheme with moving pieces throughout the secondary, including House's transition to STAR and an ongoing competition at cornerback.
That gives a veteran safety such as Harrison a reason to be the connector and communicator of the secondary. Being able to react on the go can only help Roberts unit not only improve in coverage but also keep the build efficient as possible.
Roberts' use of creeper pressure is designed to create uncertainty for quarterbacks by disguising where pressure is coming from. Harrison will have a chance to be a factor at each level of on defense, by communicating evolving assignments each play.
That's where Harrison's experience and football IQ could become invaluable.

He's proved he isn't afraid to come downhill and become involved against the run, while his seven pass breakups showed he can be a factor downfield.
While Silverfield needs Harrison's production to start his tenure at Arkansas, the redshirt senior out of Atlanta needs to become a leader in the secondary.
Arkansas' defensive backfield was one of several areas that was aggressively remodeled through the transfer portal, and Harrison was among the first players targeted to help begin the flip.
Having a potential starter described as "smart" and "savvy" while patrolling the back end can certainly help shore up any deficiencies from years prior.
And if Harrison lives up to Silverfield's billing, nobody will be looking for a reminder about who he is anymore.
