Liverpool are planning to sign a new left-back as they brace for Kostas Tsimikas to leave the club, sources have told Football Insider.
The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and no talks are said to have taken place over an extension, with the Reds now assessing their options.
Andoni Iraola has called upon the Greece international on a number of occasions this season, but has not been impressed by what he has seen, sparking new concerns.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, there is a growing expectations that Tsimikas will be replaced by Liverpool next summer.
So far this season, he has made nine appearances across all competitions and provided three assists, but doubts have crept in about his long-term future in the side.
The recruitment team at Anfield have been assessing new left-back targets as a result, and Tsimikas is now likely to leave Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer.
Will Kostas Tsimikas be replaced at Liverpool?
Football Insiderreported earlier this year that Tsimikas could be in line for an improve role at Liverpool as Andy Robertson edged closer to a move away from Anfield.
However, the Greece international could now be set to follow his former teammate in search of a new club, with no plans to renew his contract as things stand.
The search for a replacement is already underway, and Liverpool are hopeful they can upgrade on their current options to further bolster Iraola's squad.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Long-term, Liverpool will be looking for left-back, because Kostas Tsimikas is out of contract in the summer.
"We're not sure whether he will be getting a new deal or not, it doesn't look at the moment like there has been any progress towards that.
"So left-back has been flagged as an area where Liverpool need to strenghten, and work will be ongoing to identify the right options who they could bring in there."
Kostas Tsimikas return mooted as Andy Robertson exit update emerges at Liverpool Liverpool have 'concerns' about Milos Kerkez, Andoni Iraola's updated stance revealed Why do Liverpool want a new left-back?
Tsimikas is not the only concern at left-back for Liverpool, with concerns about their strength in depth at the back leading to questions about below-par performances.
Milos Kerkez has also come under fire of late, and has yet to show his best levels in Liverpool colours, raising question marks about his long-term future in the starting XI.
Football Insiderrevealed on 6 November that Liverpool are beginning to develop concerns about Kerkez's performances, with the fans also showing their frustrations.
The 22-year-old has retained his position as the starting left-back this season, and has started ten games across all competitions so far, including eight in the Premier League.
However, Iraola is a big fan of Kerkez, who he also worked with at Bournemouth, and has been backed to get him back to his best in the near future.
