Southern wins SWAC semifinal over FAMU on Michael Jacobs' last second shot
Southern University escaped with a dramatic 73–70 win over Florida A&M University in Friday night’s SWAC semifinal matchup in College Park, Georgia, in Friday, March 13.
Southern, the No. 3 seed, advances to play No. 8 seed, Prairie View A&M on Saturday night championship in Gateway Center Arena. The winner earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
With the game tied at 70, Michael Jacobs drilled a 26-foot 3-pointer from left of the key with 0.2 seconds left to give Southern the win.
Tyler Shirley of FAMU had tied the score 70-70 on a layup with 26 seconds left. Shirley led the Rattlers with 16 points.
Southern led by as many as 14 points in the first half. However, FAMU outscored Southern 16-2 over a six-minute stretch to claw back into the game. Neither team led by more than four points in the game's final stretch.
The Rattlers close out their season at 15-16 under first-year coach Charlie Ward. FAMU was looking to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007.
