FOXBOROUGH — Though the Patriots fell to the Bills on Sunday afternoon, 35-31, TreVeyon Henderson delivered one of his most electrifying games to date.
The rookie running back struck for two long touchdown runs. In the second quarter, Henderson bolted up the middle of the field for a 52-yarder, and he added a 65-yarder in the fourth quarter thanks to a ridiculous cutback and breakaway speed.
“It’s game-changing,” tight end Hunter Henry said. “You guys see it. Speed kills and you can’t really teach it. So a guy like that, if we can get him through to the second level, it’s huge.”
Henderson finished with 14 carries for 148 yards and caught a pair of passes from Drake Maye , too. Fourteen games into his rookie season, Henderson feels his comfort level growing in the Patriots offense.
“I think the biggest thing is over time being able to get more opportunities and go up against the best of the best each and every week,” Henderson said. “It’s been helping a lot, just growth. We have a great running backs coach (Tony Dews) as well who disciplines us really well, and he’s been helping me grow as well. I just want to leave it all on the field.”
On Henderson’s second touchdown run, he had an unexpected lead blocker: Drake Maye. The Patriots quarterback had drifted to the left after handing the ball off to Henderson, and when the running back cut back, Maye bolted into action to lead the way. He got a piece of Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White around the 15-yard line.
“I just think a play like that shows a lot about Drake Maye, the type of player and person he is, and how unselfish he is,” Henderson said. “That’s why when I got in the end zone, the first thing I did was point up to God, of course, but then point at him and just let him know I really appreciate that, appreciate his effort.”
