Shaquille O'Neal's larger-than-life personality wasn't limited to the hardwood, as evidenced by the $500 million empire he had built over the years. The former seven-foot center is known to own one of the fanciest car collections. Adding to the opulence are the sprawling estates.
Coming from a modest household, O'Neal was indeed grateful for the efforts and sacrifices his parents made to give him a better life. Shaquille once revealed how he didn't even know that he was poor . Thus, when his turn came, the Orlando Magic veteran made sure to do his part.
However, O'Neal seemed to be in too much of a hurry, splurging his first million within an hour. The four-time champion wanted to pamper his parents to the fullest, hoping to provide them with all the luxuries of the world. Though there were more systematic ways to accomplish his eventual goal, Shaq had zero regrets.
"The first thing I wanted to do was relieve my parents of their jobs. I (spent) a million dollars in about 45 minutes, but it was well worth it," the Big Diesel told CNN in a 2015 report.
"My momma is happy, her house is paid for; she had the car that she knows she would never get in her dreams, a Mercedes-Benz. My father (had) one, I had one. I was good," added Shaq, who wanted to upgrade the lifestyle of his parents.
An expensive affair
Not willing to even wait for his rookie debut, O'Neal had once gone so far as to splurge $500,000 before being drafted.
The Magic had invited O'Neal to visit Orlando a couple of days before the 1992 draft. In what was indeed a moment to rejoice, Shaquille decided to take his family along as well. While there was nothing wrong with it, the LSU product went a little too overboard in the hotel stay.
"So we got there, this is the going joke with me: I stayed at the Hyatt and spent like $500,000. It was me, my mother and father, brothers, and sisters. Room service, movies, they go downstairs, charge it to the room. Three months later, half a million. My accountant says, 'You know you could have bought a house by now?'" narrated O'Neal, who didn't take long to attain financial wisdom.
While O'Neal had become more mindful about his investments and spending habits, he would still indulge now and then. A case in point was recording the biggest purchase in Walmart's history . That said, he always advised young players to invest rather than spend on luxury items.
Multiply your money
O'Neal had surely witnessed both ends of the spectrum when it came to managing his finances. Nevertheless, he eventually emerged as one of the wealthiest players in the league, turning himself into a brand. At the same time, he was never hesitant in passing down the knowledge.
"Advice number one: learn what annuities are," said O'Neal, who also followed the old-fashioned way of parking his money in the bank.
"You want cars, you want diamond earrings, you want jewelry?. Do whatever you want (with the other 25 percent)," added Shaq, admitting it was easier said than done.
A multimillionaire today, O'Neal had his priorities set from day one, whether it was giving his parents a better life or building a staggering net worth. Whether it's his investing strategies or his pursuit of three degrees, the Big Diesel is an institution in himself today.
