Spurs star Victor Wembanyama's urgent message after wild Game 1 vs. Timberwolves appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
Victor Wembanyama was a chore to score against all night long in Game 1 of the San Antonio Spurs ' Western Conference semifinal series against the Minnesota Timberwolves , as he recorded 12 total blocks on the night, but his game on offense left a lot to be desired . He scored just five points on 2-8 shooting from the field in the second half of what ended up being a 104-102 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
As the best player and leader of his team, Wembanyama has the responsibility to lead the Spurs on his shoulders. And the good news is that Wembanyama is responding well in the aftermath of a crushing defeat. In his postgame presser, he acknowledged that he and his running mate De'Aaron Fox have to be better .
"Obviously we have to be better. We need to figure out before 48 hours what we can do better. And I got no doubt that we will. I trust us," Wembanyama said, via Don Harris of News 4 San Antonio .
Wembanyama and Fox did combine for just 21 points on 10-31 shooting from the field, which is rather unsightly for the Spurs' two best players. Fox came alive in the fourth, scoring eight of his 10 points during the period, but the game would not have been that close to begin with had he not been AWOL for the first three quarters.
This series is becoming a classic battle between a grizzled and playoff-tested squad in the Timberwolves against an inexperienced team in the Spurs. It will be interesting to see this young San Antonio team navigate adversity in the playoffs against a Minnesota team that's gone through everything and more over the past three years.
Wembanyama and Fox are much better than they showed on Monday night, and with the Spurs not wanting to throw away homecourt advantage willy-nilly, expect those two to bounce back from a rather poor Game 1 performance.
