The Spurs enter this Texas showdown looking to stabilize what has been a frustrating opening week. Following a 12-point defeat against Oklahoma City on opening night, the reigning Western Conference champions dropped a heartbreaking 114-110 contest to the Houston Rockets to fall to 0-2.
That clash in Houston came down to the wire, with Amen Thompson swatting Victor Wembanyama's game-tying layup attempt with under a second remaining.
Wembanyama put up 25 points and 13 boards, but the heartbreak stung even more considering he banked in a deep three-pointer moments earlier that was waved off after head coach Mitch Johnson had called a timeout with five seconds left.
The clear bright spot has been Dylan Harper, who poured in 20 points without committing a single turnover while providing electrifying downhill pressure, highlighted by a driving slam that kept San Antonio alive in the final minute.
Frontcourt size remains a pressing issue next to Wembanyama, making Tobias Harris' day-to-day status with a calf injury a factor as the Spurs seek to find the first victory of the season against Dallas.
The Mavericks into this matchup fresh off an emphatic 121-105 road victory over the Indiana Pacers , crashing Tyrese Haliburton's homecoming in style.
However, that triumph came with major concern after reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg suffered a left shoulder injury late in the second quarter when Aaron Nesmith fouled him hard on a breakaway attempt. Flagg sat out the entire second half, leaving Dallas to monitor his availability closely.
In his absence, Kyrie Irving took complete control of the offense, dropping 24 points while hitting five of his ten attempts from beyond the arc. P.J. Washington also dominated inside with 20 points and 13 rebounds , delivering head coach Dusty May his first victory with the franchise.
Dallas showed tremendous scoring balance in Indiana, but if Flagg is sidelined or operating on limited minutes, their defensive rotations and glass coverage on the perimeter will face a much stiffer test against San Antonio's attacking guards.
Sportsbooks are struggling to settle on Irving's scoring totals as they await final confirmation on Flagg's availability, creating a massive discrepancy across the board with lines sitting at 18.5 on bet365 and up to 21.5 on FanDuel.
Rather than navigating the volatility of whether Flagg suits up, the smartest way to attack this matchup is by turning to the prop market on Dylan Harper Over 4.5 rebounds.
Action PRO projects Harper for 6.34 rebounds, handing bettors a massive 21.7% edge against the market and earning an A-grade rating.
Harper grabbed seven boards against the Thunder before pulling down three against Houston.
With Dallas relying on spread-out sets, firing plenty of long perimeter attempts, and potentially lacking Flagg's wing rebounding presence, Harper should see extensive playing time and plenty of long caroms off the glass.
We'll back Harper to clear 4.5 rebounds tonight.
Pick: Dylan Harper Over 4.5 Rebounds (-114, FanDuel)
