- St. Paul’s Joe Mauer adds another hall of fame to his résumé
Former Twins catcher Joe Mauer has been chosen by a second baseball hall of fame. The St. Paul native will be inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame, the St. Paul Saints announced Thursday in a release.
Mauer, a first-ballot member of the Baseball Hall of Fame after a 15-year career with the Twins, will officially be inducted Aug. 6 before a Saints game at CHS Field.
"I'm proud to be inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame," Mauer said in the Saints' release. "It's an honor to join this prestigious group representing our shared Irish heritage through the game of baseball."
Born and raised in St. Paul, and a graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall, won three American League batting titles and was the 2009 AL MVP. As the Raiders' quarterback, he was the Gatorade National Player of the Year and committed to play at Florida State before the Twins picked him No. 1 overall in the 2001 amateur draft.
The Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame is a virtual entity founded by Shaun Clancy formerly located at his restaurant, Foley's, in New York City. Other members include Wade Boggs, Sean Casey, Jim Palmer, Nolan Ryan and Vin Scully.
