Standout Grand Canyon guard set to enter transfer portal
Despite not making the NCAA tournament, the Grand Canyon Lopes impressed in their first season in the Mountain West Conference, finishing with a 20-12 overall record and going 13-7 in conference play, good for third in the standings. The MWC was a significant step up from the WAC, where the Lopes had previously competed.
But the road will get harder heading into the offseason, as star guard Makaih Williams is set to enter the transfer portal, per On3's Joe Tipton.
Williams averaged 14.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Lopes during the 2025-26 season, earning an All-Mountain West Third Team honor for his efforts. He was shot 43.0% from the field and 33.5% from 3-point range.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder began his career in the WAC with the UT Arlington Mavericks, where he averaged double digit points as a freshman before transferring to Grand Canyon for his sophomore and junior campaigns. He was a solid player last season, averaging 8.4 points and 2.4 assists, but blossomed into one of the Lopes' most reliable scorers this season.
With three years of experience and having started 70 of 100 contests in his career, Williams will enter the portal as one of the top guards in the field.
He will have one season of eligibility remaining.
