The 2026 quarterback didn't pan out like the Pittsburgh Steelers hoped. The picks that general manager Omar Khan stockpiled with plans to move up and take a blue-chip signal-caller prospect were for naught in that regard.
Now, there seems to be a chance that an unexpected collegiate name could become available.
It appears that Texas Tech passer Brendan Sorsby will be stripped of his college football eligibility after his gambling issues surfaced. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer has spoken to lawyers about whether Sorsby would take the NCAA to court in that case and if he'd be able to get an injunction to continue to play.
"He's really unlikely to get an injunction because this is such a clear rules violation," Breer said Wednesday on "The Dan Patrick Show." "In other words, to get an injunction, you've gotta prove that you've got a reasonable chance of winning. Because this is so cut and dry, there's a good chance he'd be denied. … So if you're looking at this and you're him, and it's like, 'OK, there's maybe a very small chance I wind up getting my eligibility back.'
"Is the better plan for you now just to go to the NFL?"
Breer named the New York Jets , Arizona Cardinals , Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins as teams "that have kept the powder dry on really going all in on a quarterback in anticipation of next year." Sorsby would be up for grabs in the NFL Supplemental Draft if he chooses.
"If you're one of those teams, do you look at it and say, 'Let's just throw a second round pick at this?'" Breer said. "And then, you start to kind of dig deeper and it's like if you're Pittsburgh or Minnesota , where you say, 'We're gonna be at the bottom of the first round next year and we're not gonna have a shot at a (Arch) Manning or a (Dante) Moore or a (CJ) Carr. Do we throw a first-round pick at this at the premise that it's gonna be a low first-round pick?'
"I know that there are some NFL people that feel like, just from a physical ability standpoint, he has top of the first round talent."
The Steelers formally offered Aaron Rodgers a UFA tender on Monday, a move that could be an effort to force the four-time Associated Press NFL MVP's decision on whether he wants to play for the team again next season. Mike McCarthy's team also selected Penn State's Drew Allar in the third round of last week's 2026 NFL Draft, adding him to a room that currently includes Mason Rudolph and Will Howard .
