PITTSBURGH —For the first time since being injured in Week 8 last season, Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott got back on the field in game action on Friday night.
Elliott, 29, tore his hamstring completely off the bone after badly hyperextending his knee during a primetime loss to the Green Bay Packers last October. He had to get surgery to reattach the tendon, but finally returned to start against the New York Jets in the Steelers' second preseason game.
"I think I'm coming up on nine and a half, 10 months (in my recovery)," Elliott said after a training camp practice earlier this month. "Obviously, with me being a competitor, sometimes I get frustrated with (sitting out). I love ball. I feel good, explosive, cutting, making plays. Shit, I feel really great. It's a process. I'll be ready Week 1. I think next week I'll ramp it up a little bit more."

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy had said "there's no reason" to push Elliott.
Elliott gave Jets tight end Jelani Woods a good pop near the left pylon, but couldn't stop him from getting in for a 13-yard touchdown reception to cap the game's opening series.
Last offseason, Elliott signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract extension that will keep in black and gold until 2027. He's started all 19 games he's played for the Steelers.
