As Pittsburgh Steelers training camp rolls along, Mike McCarthy's team took a look at a group of players on a tryout basis on Thursday, including ex-Nebraska quarterback/tight end Heinrich Haarberg .
Haarberg, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 230 pounds, operated the Cornhuskers' offense as a redshirt sophomore, starting eight games and leading the team to a 5-3 mark. The next season, after highly-touted passer Dylan Raiola got to town, Haarberg served as head coach Matt Rhule's backup signal-caller for all 12 regular-season games before switching to tight end for the Cornhuskers' bowl game.
Haarberg played in all 13 games for Nebraska last season, starting one. He pulled in eight passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball nine times for nine yards.
McCarthy and his staff have emphasized positional versatility since being hired, and Haarberg has shown a willingness to do what's needed to get on the field.
Haarberg arrived in Lincoln as a three-star recruit, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He chose Nebraska over Boston College, Buffalo, NC State and Vanderbilt.
Currently, the Steelers roster Pat Freiermuth , Darnell Washington , Robert Tonyan and Jaheim Bell at tight end. Tonyan previously played with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
