The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived wide receiver Colton Dowell , according to the NFL transactions page for Sunday, Aug. 9, just two days after claiming him off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers .
Dowell did not participate in the lone Steelers practice that was held during his time on the squad at Latrobe Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. Tight end Lance Mason, who was claimed on waivers on the same day as Dowell, did participate.
No corresponding move was announced, and the Steelers Now have one vacancy on their 90-man training camp roster.
Dowell, 27, is a 6-foot-3, 212-pound wide receiver and a former seventh-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans out of UT Martin in 2023.
Dowell spent two seasons with the Titans in 2023 and 2024, appearing in 10 games as a rookie in 2023 and even making one start. He recorded one reception on two targets for three yards.
For the Titans as a rookie, Dowell appeared on 51 snaps of offense and 139 snaps of special teams, appearing on kickoff coverage, kickoff return, punt coverage and punt return units.
In Week 17 against the Houston Texans , Dowell suffered a severe knee injury, tearing his ACL and meniscus. That injury kept him out of the rest of the 2023 season and the entire 2024 season.
Dowell returned to the Titans for 2025, but was waived on July 24. He caught on with the Baltimore Ravens for a five-day stint on the practice squad last October, but was released without appearing in a game, and signed with the 49ers in January.

A Lebanon, Tennessee , native, Dowell was a two-star recruit coming out of Wilson Central High School. He redshirted as a true freshman at UT Martin, and was a part-time player in 2018 before becoming a starter in 2019.
Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dowell was able to play a sixth year of college football, and in 2022, he had a breakout season, making 67 catches for 1,036 yards and six touchdowns, while becoming a first-team all-conference selection and leaving UT Martin as the Skyhawks' all-time leading receiver.
