The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed safety Sebastian Castro to their practice squad , the team announced on Monday. Castro was among the Steelers' final roster cuts for the 53-man roster.
Castro, a second-year Iowa product, began his NFL career with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent last season, then was signed off Pittsburgh's practice squad by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . He played in one game for them before being waived a little over a month later and being claimed off waivers by the Steelers.

Castro played eight games for the Steelers, seeing 72 snaps exclusively on special teams.
Castro was seen wearing a boot during last Tuesday's practice, during which he sat out as the Steelers prepared to play the Buffalo Bills in their preseason finale. The Steelers' initial 53-man roster holds three safeties — Jaquan Brisker , Robert Spears-Jennings and Rayshawn Jenkins — and DeShon Elliott was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return.
Brisker hasn't been fully healthy this preseason, either, however. Jenkins — a veteran who's spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers , Jacksonville Jaguars , Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns — showed up earlier this month. Spears-Jennings, a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, showed enough to stick around.
While his NFL resume is brief, Castro's pro career has already been defined by resilience and special teams value. After going undrafted in 2025, he proved his worth through raw grit, appearing in nine total games as a rookie—one with Tampa Bay and eight with Pittsburgh. Though he has yet to log a defensive snap in the regular season, he quickly carved out a niche on special teams coverage units, registering 78 total snaps and chipping in two tackles. For a young safety on the roster bubble, that foundation of professional game experience and high-effort tape serves as a strong launching pad as he looks to take the next step.
