Pittsburgh Steelers Director of Player Scouting Mark Sadowski was front and center, watching quarterback Garrett Nussmeier go through his workout at LSU's pro day on Monday.
During Mike McCarthy's tenure in Dallas from 2020-22, Doug Nussmeier served as the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach. Nussmeier, of course, is the father of Garrett Nussmeier . While that connection doesn't guarantee anything, it does suggest a level of familiarity, both philosophically and schematically, that could matter if Pittsburgh is evaluating Nussmeier seriously.
Nussmeier, who stands at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,052 yards with 29 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and passer rating of 142.7 in his first season as a starter at LSU.
Last season, Nussmeier played through a debilitating abdominal/core injury that limited him to nine games. He completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,927 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Nussmeier is projected to be a second or third round) pick in the 2026 NFL Draf t.
The Steelers have also shown interest in North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton ahead of next month's 2026 NFL Draft.
After sending quarterbacks coach Tom Arth and scout Jim Ward to the Bisons' pro day to see Payton work out, McCarthy's team is bringing the FCS standout in for a pre-draft visit on Friday.
Payton is the second known signal-caller the Steelers are hosting at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, following Miami 's Carson Beck , who visited on Tuesday.
42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still deciding on whether he wants to return to the Steelers for another season.
If Rodgers spurns the Steelers, the franchise is expected to pivot to veteran Kirk Cousins . Sixth-round draft pick from last year Will Howard is another option for the Steelers at QB.
