As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for the start of training camp, roster logistics and injury management have immediately taken center stage. To open summer practices, general manager Omar Khan announced key health updates regarding the secondary, confirming that two defensive backs will initially be sidelined.
Beat reporter Brian Batko relayed the news from Khan's press conference, sharing the official update on X .
"Two Steelers expected to start on the PUP list are DBs Jalen Ramsey and Donte Kent , per Omar Khan," said Batko in a post on X.
Beginning camp on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list allows both players to count toward the 90-man offseason roster limit while working under medical supervision. Players on Active/PUP are permitted to attend team meetings, perform off-field conditioning, and can be activated to full practice participation at any point prior to final roster cutdowns.
For Jalen Ramsey, who sustained a knee injury during spring workouts, the designation is largely a precautionary measure. Khan noted that Ramsey's injury does not require surgery, and the organization does not anticipate him missing regular-season action.
Given Ramsey's expected versatile role spanning cornerback and safety, Pittsburgh's staff will exercise patience to ensure the star defensive back is fully healthy before taking team reps.
Meanwhile, Donte Kent continues his rehabilitation after suffering from a torn ACL last December. The young defensive back saw his rookie campaign derailed by injuries, making his stint on Active/PUP a crucial transitional step in his recovery process.
