Veteran safety Darnell Savage Jr. has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers , agent Seth Katz told NFL insider Aaron Wilson .
Savage agreed to terms with the Steelers in March but did not officially sign until now. The reason has not been disclosed but it appears it was injury-related.
"Darnell is excited about playing for the Steelers," Katz said.
Savage played for three teams last year — two games for Jacksonville , eight games for Washington and two games for the Buffalo Bills . He also started 13 games for the Jaguars in 2024.
Savage spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers , who selected him in the first round (No. 21 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. By then, however, Mike McCarthy had been replaced at the helm by Matt LaFleur.
Only three teams were worse than the Steelers at patrolling the air last season. Pittsburgh permitted 243.9 passing yards per game, which called for a major makeover in the secondary.
Joey Porter Jr. , who according to Pro Football Focus hasn't allowed a touchdown reception in two seasons, remains and could soon be up for a new deal. McCarthy's team also re-signed Asante Samuel Jr. , who didn't have much of a free-agent market at this time last year due to a neck injury that required surgery. Now-former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean is joining the fold, as well.
Along with bringing in Savage, the Steelers added Pittsburgh native Jaquan Brisker back in March. Brisker played high school football at Gateway and continued to play collegiately at Lackawanna and Penn State before being drafted by the Chicago Bears .
