- Steelers Try Out former HBCU Running Back

The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted running back Terrell Jennings for a tryout on Friday at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
The Steelers have played each of their last two games without Rico Dowdle at running back, with Travis Homer signed to the 53-man roster and Lew Nichols a two-time game-day elevation. The team has two empty spots on their practice squad.
Jennings, 25, was an undrafted free agent in 2024 out of Florida A&M who spent his first two NFL seasons with the New England Patriots, but was waived with an injury settlement in August.
The 6-foot, 222-pound running back played in three games in 2024 and seven games last year, rushing a combined 36 times for 106 yards and a touchdown. He also works on kickoff, kickoff return and punt return teams.
At Florida A&M, Jennings had his best season as a senior in 2023, when he rushed 120 times for 673 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 60 more yards.
Dowdle has yet to return to practice since suffering a toe injury in Week 2 against the New England Patriots. Nichols has been elevated from the practice squad twice, but can only be elevated one more time before he must be signed to the 53-man roster.
The Steelers have significant history with players from HBCUs like Florida A&M. Steelers Hall of Famers Mel Blount, Donnie Shell and John Stallworth all played at HBCUs and scout Bill Nunn became legendary for scouting overlooked, predominantly Black schools.
