Work is nearly complete on the Pittsburgh Steelers ' new state-of-the-art facility at Hazelwood Green, according to WTAE . The facility will be operated by Steelers Charities and branded with the Steelers logo..
The project was made possible by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, which awarded Steelers Charities $10 million for construction.
The facility, directly across the Monongahela River from the Steelers' UPMC Rooney Sports Complex practice facility, will allow the club to host youth football events, clinics with current and former players and coaches and more. The Steelers will also hold some of the youth football and girl's flag football events that have been at the Rooney facility in Hazelwood.
In addition to a full-size turf outdoor field, a 10,000 square foot building will be renovated for indoor sports and recreation for year-round use. The site can also be expanded to use the field for high school football games.
Tishman Speyer is the company developing the entirety of Hazelwood Green, the former LTV Steel Pittsburgh Works site. The mill closed in 1998, but redevelopment of the site has been slow to this point.
A local youth football team, the Hazelwood Cobras, are one of the organizations that will benefit from the new facility.
"This field is going to be for youth sports, the Hazelwood Cobras, which are our local kids' football team," Pittsburgh City Council member Barb Warwick told WTAE.
Hazelwood Green will also be the home to Pittsburgh Central Catholic this upcoming season. The stadium can seat up to 3,000 people.
Hazelwood Green is located on the site of the former LTV Steel Pittsburgh Works and spans 178 acres directly across the Monongahela River from the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
"It's an area that's been depressed since steel mill time, and it needs an injection of energy and business," said Jason Short, who owns Abstract Realm Brewing next door.
Local businesses are optimistic about the field's impact on the community.
"We're really excited about not only the exposure it'll give us, but obviously the area and the community," Short said.
"We're hoping that this is just the beginning of a floodgates kind of opening for the whole little area," said Nathan Johnston, who works next door.
It has not yet been released when the field will officially open.
