BALTIMORE – Stefon Diggs was livid.
In the Patriots ’ first drive on Sunday night, the veteran caught a 25-yard pass and landed hard on the ground. Diggs grabbed his shoulder and stayed on the turf for a moment when NFL concussion spotters flagged him.
That’s when he was told he had to go into the blue medical tent for a concussion test under the league’s protocol. The Patriots receiver was so mad that people had to force him into the medical tent.
Diggs said he saw red when he was told he wasn’t allowed back in the game until he passed the test.
‘I was blacking out, bro,” Diggs said. “They was holding me in the tent. They said I had a concussion, but I never touched my head. I never laid on the ground. They monitored me for a concussion. I said, ‘I never had a concussion. I was touching my shoulder. So how would y’all say had a concussion?’ So I was fighting with them to get back out there.”
Diggs missed five plays during the ordeal. At the time, NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark told the broadcast that Diggs had to be physically forced into the tent and restrained before he eventually escaped out the back.
The receiver said he eventually went in and talked to the doctor.
“I was like, I never had a concussion,” Diggs said. “They said, ‘What game is it? What quarter is it? Who’d you play last week?’ I said, ‘Listen, I don’t even remember what I ate yesterday.’”
Diggs left the game at 10:52 of the first quarter and was back with the Patriots at 7:20 of the first quarter.
The receiver’s return was a good thing for the Patriots as the veteran led the team with nine catches for 138 yards. Diggs also had a crucial 21-yard catch on fourth-and-2 with 3:02 left on the clock. Two plays later, Rhamondre Stevenson scored a game-winning touchdown.
Diggs said he felt bad when he wasn’t in the game, but also admitted he apologized to those in the blue tent.
“It’s the first drive. I’m wired to get back out there, get out there to make plays for my team,” Diggs said. “And we kind of, like, had a little stall, and so I was like, ‘Damn, I’m supposed to be out there.’ Parts of me were feeling like I let the team down if I’m not out there a little bit. So I just try to, like, hone it in. I apologized to them afterwards, but you can’t stop me from getting on that field.”
