Stefon Diggs' future in New England could hinge on whether he is willing to adjust his $26.5 million cap hit for the 2026 season.
Diggs led the Patriots with 85 receptions and 1,013 receiving yards last year, reasserting himself as the focal point of the passing attack.
However, with the veteran turning 33 next fall, the financial implications of his deal are under renewed scrutiny. The situation has sparked differing views behind the scenes.

According to MassLive , "One source said that if Diggs wants to remain in New England, he must restructure his contract to lower the cap hit.
"The Patriots are willing to give him an incentive-laden deal that allows the veteran to earn back the money – if he produces."
New England could create significant cap space by moving on, including major savings with a post-June 1 designation.
That financial flexibility explains why the front office is exploring alternatives, even after Diggs' productive season.
The same report states: "A second source predicted Diggs would be unwilling to restructure his contract after leading the Patriots in multiple receiving categories.
"The team has discussed how they could replace his production. That's a sticking point due to a poor receiver class in free agency and the Patriots holding the 31st pick in the first round."
From Diggs' perspective, a pay adjustment could be difficult to justify after delivering WR1-level output. For the Patriots, replacing that production would not be straightforward given limited draft capital and a thin market.
The standoff reflects a broader balancing act between performance and payroll. Whether Diggs values security over structure may determine how the situation unfolds.
