The Arrival of Stack Jack
Stephen Jackson didn't arrive in Charlotte as some wide-eyed rookie; he rolled in with a 2003 NBA championship ring already sitting heavy on his finger. The Golden State Warriors shipped him to the Bobcats less than a month into the 2009-10 season, a move that screamed urgency. To make the deal happen, Charlotte had to part ways with Vladimir Radmanovic and Raja Bell. That was a bold gamble for a franchise still trying to figure out its own identity.

According to Rookie Wire , Jackson suited up for 139 games in a Bobcats uniform, pouring in an average of 19.8 points per game during that stretch. That scoring punch was exactly what a team that constantly struggled to find the bottom of the net desperately needed. Beyond the scoring, he grabbed 4.8 rebounds and dished 3.6 assists while logging 37.7 minutes of action. His defense stayed sharp too, recording 1.4 steals and 0.5 blocks in every outing. (Who else was doing that work on both ends for the Bobcats?)
Right away, he became the squad's most valuable asset. Local fans went wild for his intensity and his knack for taking over a game when it mattered most. You can't blame them for calling him "Stack Jack"—the moniker stuck because it was true. His presence injected a level of experience the team had been starving for.
A Trade That Shook the Roster
The 2010-11 season wrapped up with a 34-48 record, leaving the team crying out for a new direction. Jackson headed to the Milwaukee Bucks once that campaign ended, part of a three-team deal that completely reshuffled the roster landscape. In exchange, Charlotte snagged veteran forward Corey Maggette . But here's the real twist: the Bobcats also landed Bismack Biyombo in that same swap. Rookie Wire notes that the Sacramento Kings selected Biyombo as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. Landing a top-seven pick was a massive win for a young club hunting for a future cornerstone, even if the deal meant trading away immediate scoring for long-term potential.

Jackson only played three more seasons after leaving Charlotte, finishing his career with stints at the Bucks, Spurs , and Clippers . His final career stats show a player who could do a little bit of everything, averaging 15.1 points and 3.9 rebounds across 858 total appearances. That Charlotte chapter remains a significant piece of his legacy.
The Legacy of the Number One
The Bobcats' jersey history is a weird mix of short stints and long stays. Before Jackson, Cartier Martin wore the number 1. Martin signed a 10-day contract in 2008 and played 33 games. He was an undrafted player who impressed enough to earn a standard deal, proving the team's willingness to give anyone a shot if they could play. According to Rookie Wire, Martin averaged just 2.6 points in 8.1 minutes per contest. His career spanned seven seasons with multiple teams, and across 243 games, his totals reached 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds. The contrast between Martin and Jackson is stark. One was a journeyman trying to find a spot; the other was a star bringing championship pedigree to the city. (How many other players could make that kind of impact?)
Jackson's time in Charlotte proved that big names still wanted to play in the Queen City. He left behind a solid statistical footprint, and the trade that sent him away brought in a top-seven draft pick that helped shape the franchise's future. The number 1 jersey now holds the memory of a player who gave his all for the team during a tough time.
