PHOENIX – If this is the end of Steve Kerr 's time in Golden State , it will have been quite the run.
With the Golden State Warriors ' season ending at the hands of the Phoenix Suns , all eyes turn to the future of Kerr, with the Dubs coach not under contract going into next season. In the immediate aftermath of the Warriors' 111-96 in the final Play-In game, Kerr said he'll take some time before deciding what he wants to do next.
"Take a week or two, and eventually sit down and talk with Joe [Lacob] and Mike [Dunleavy]," Kerr said. "We've always had a great partnership and collaboration. [I'll] just see where they are, and I'll tell them where I am, and we'll talk about what's next for the Warriors, what the plan is this offseason, and we will come to a collaborative decision on what's next."
Kerr entered this year not seeking a contract extension, preferring to feel out what comes next based on how the season played out. Ultimately, this season played out not as the Warriors had hoped, with injuries derailing their chances of contending.
"I don't know what's going to happen," Kerr continued. "I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There's a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas and all that. And if that's the case, then I will be just nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have. To coach this franchise in front of our fans in the bay, and to coach Steph Curry , coach Dray, the whole group.
"It might still go on. It may not, I don't know at this point. But we all need to step away a little bit and then reconvene."
How Stephen Curry, Draymond Green feel about Steve Kerr

In the dying moments of the game, Kerr came up and hugged Stephen Curry and Draymond Green . And there they lingered, the longtime pillars of the Warriors franchise, architects of this dynastic run, sharing what could be one last moment together in a competitive setting.
"[Kerr] said, 'Yes, I don't know what's gonna happen, but if it is the last time, I just want to share this moment,'" Curry shared. "To the point of, like, after laying it all out in the line for as long as we did during this game, that was kind of a jolt of a message."
Curry paused for a moment before grinning.
"But he left the door open," Curry smiled.
For Kerr's longtime players, they know where they stand in terms of his future with the Warriors. Steve Kerr is their coach. Steve Kerr is their guy. Green had already said that to insider Tim Kawakami earlier this month on the TK show.
"We don't want to play for anyone else," was his message. And when asked if he could imagine life without Kerr as his coach, Green reaffirmed that feeling.
"No, I couldn't," Green said. He took a moment of quiet to digest his feelings on that potential Kerr-less future. "I think one of the biggest blessings as far as my career has gone, is being able to be in one place… And so to have the situation that I've had has been incredible for me, because I just don't deal with change well. I don't love it, so I don't want to think about that. I hope that's not the case, but we'll see what happens."
What will Steve Kerr do next?
As for Curry, he just wants Kerr to be comfortable in whatever decision he makes next .
"I want Coach to be happy," Curry expressed. "I want him to be excited about the job, I want him to believe he's the right guy for the job, I want him to have an opportunity to, again, enjoy what he does. So whatever that means for him, everybody's plan is their own. And [I'm] not going to try to tell anybody what to do. He knows how I feel about him. That shouldn't even need to be said."
"However it goes, you're thankful for what we've been able to accomplish over this run. Thankful for an opportunity, hopefully, to put it together and do something again next year. And again, I just want Coach to be able to look at the situation as a whole, and feel like he's the right guy."
Green pointed out that he believes Kerr coaching this year on the final year of his contract, has less to do with him potentially leaving and more so with him feeling comfortable in "who he is and what he has to offer."
Regardless, it's an emotional time for Kerr and his guys, a player-coach trio that's been together 12 years. That much was clear when Kerr was asked if he could bring himself to walk away from Curry.
"That's really part of the equation, right? I mean, I don't want to walk away from Steph," Kerr said solemnly.
There were 12 seasons and four championships of weight in those words. And a lot of good memories hanging on his expression.
"I'm not, definitely not, going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph. But all this stuff has to be aligned and right. And so those are all discussions that we'll have."
Kerr will take some time in the coming weeks to process what's next for him and the Warriors.
