In the aftermath of one of the darkest days in franchise history, the Oklahoma City Thunder will have 75-plus games to pick up the pieces. The most consequential regular-season win in this era occurred this past Sunday over the LA Clippers .
While the Thunder are a perfect 4-0 to start the 2026-27 regular season, nobody cares — and rightfully so. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are basically out for the entire year. Both sustained gruesome injuries that completely shook up OKC's ambitions before Halloween even arrived.
Williams sustained a gruesome-looking leg injury in the final minute of regulation. Going up for a driving layup, he landed badly on his left leg. It snapped backwards. The ankle hooked right. He needed to be stretchered off the floor. That turned out to be a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle. He had surgery for it.
Earlier in the game, Wallace exited the floor. Fighting over Isaiah Jackson's screen, he fell in pain and immediately went to the locker room. He sustained a torn labrum on his shoulder. He'll require surgery, too. Sam Presti delivered the grim medical updates on both before OKC's win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday.
So, what now?
The Thunder have lost two of their four best players. Williams was projected to be an All-NBA forward again. Alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, that trio has made up OKC's pillars over the last few years. Now, he's out again. It'll be a second straight season where he's been sidelined by injury. In total, he's played in 36 regular-season games over the last two years.
Meanwhile, the Thunder rolled out the red carpet for Wallace. They signed him to a handsome contract extension right before Opening Night. He was promoted to a full-time starter. His career trajectory arrow pointed upward. Now, the incredibly-durable defensive pest is out for several months. Maybe for the entire 2026-27 season, as well.
There's no downplaying how catastrophic these two injuries are. Zero positive glass half-full takes exist. Both in the short-term and long-term — can you really depend on Williams to stay healthy ever again? Or reach his Gen Z Scottie Pippen heights? Especially after how nasty his leg injury looked? Those are the types of brutal scenes that completely alter your career for the worse.
With this latest development, I think it's time to recalibrate what a successful 2026-27 season looks like for the Thunder. Before Sunday, it was a title or bust. They looked like the NBA title favorite everybody picked over the summer. A 3-0 start featured dominant wins over the San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets.
Now, though? Who knows. The Thunder certainly fell down a few rungs. Before, they were a co-title favorite. Now, they're just part of the group of inconsistent contenders. Gilgeous-Alexander and Holmgren are an All-NBA duo that should keep you in the conversation as a competitive team. After that, though, you're relying on a bunch of role players to scale up on a consistent basis. That might be asking a lot.
Sure, the Thunder should still compete for a top-three seed. Gilgeous-Alexander alone promises you that. But OKC is now without some of its top-heavy star power. Again. And this time, there's virtually zero hope of them eventually returning to provide some late-season help. This isn't some Disney-esque movie, sadly. It's real life.
Because of that, I think NBA championship expectations should be dashed away. Unfortunately, that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes. The Thunder had the makings of a second NBA championship in three years. But a random October night has completely flipped that upside down. The repercussions of Williams' and Wallace's injuries will be felt for years to come.
The sun rose again. The NBA marathon moves on. The Thunder still have six-plus months of games left to figure something out. And who knows? Maybe luck finally breaks in their way. But if we're being realistic and blunt, this team — for the first time in years — is no longer in the inner-circle title picture
