Week 2 was a brutal reminder that fantasy football is a cruel mistress. The excitement of the opener faded fast, replaced by injuries and low scores that left managers scrambling. But while the league groaned over bad matchups, one specific situation is screaming for attention in Houston.
The Houston Texans offense has struggled, yet the Indianapolis Colts defense is giving up an absurd 706 passing yards through just two games. This mismatch creates a massive opportunity for anyone willing to dig past the rankings.
The headline story is simple: Nico Collins is not playing. ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime reported that the Texans wide receiver was absent from the media-accessible practice segment on Wednesday. Collins injured his hamstring last week and missed the loss to the Bengals, and there is no guarantee he will play this weekend against the division rival Colts.
Fantasy managers who have Collins rostered need to prepare for a potential second straight missed game. The team hopes he is not out long-term, but hope does not win fantasy matchups. With Collins sidelined, the volume shifts immediately to the remaining targets.
Enter Xavier Hutchinson, currently ranked as the WR67 by the Fantasy Footballers . That ranking is a trap. At this time, all signs point to Hutchinson becoming the primary target in an offense that has nowhere else to look. With the Colts surrendering a league-high 9.8 yards per completion, he leads the team in targets and has ample opportunity to succeed through volume.
Vulnerability exists across the entire defense because the Colts have allowed the second-most rushing yards in the league. Hutchinson is not a sure thing, but he is the only logical flex option for managers desperate for points in Week 3.
If you need a second option, look at the Cleveland Browns. Denzel Boston was the biggest beneficiary of Deshaun Watson's first good game since the pandemic. The Browns were surpassed by the rookie wide receiver in routes, targets, receptions, and yards during Sunday's game. RotoBaller NFL states that he holds a 27% first-read target rate across the first two games.
In Week 2, Boston evaded multiple tacklers to reach the end zone, recording five receptions, 95 yards, and a TD. Although the Panthers secondary is decent, Boston stands a strong chance of surpassing his current WR43 ranking. He is a risky start, but the usage is undeniable.
The data is clear, and the path is open for the bold. While others hesitate over injury reports, the smart managers are loading up on volume. The Texans offense must rely heavily on any remaining players since the Colts defense has surrendered an absurd 706 passing yards over two games. Xavier Hutchinson leads the team in targets with Collins out. That is the only stat that matters for Week 3.
