SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Patriots better hope that the extra-long halftime at the Super Bowl gives them enough time to get their offense straightened out.
The New England defense kept them in the game, but the Patriots trailed, 9-0, at intermission at Levi’s Stadium.
The Patriots couldn’t get any momentum and never got closer than Seattle ’s 43-yard line in the first half. Even then, two of their next three plays went backwards.
No team that was scoreless in the first half has ever won the Super Bowl. It was the fifth first half without a touchdown.
New England managed just three first downs and was 2-for-7 on third down.
Drake Maye was under pressure throughout. He completed just 6 of 11 throws for 48 yards. He was sacked three times for 30 yards as the Seattle defensive line lived up to its reputation as New England managed just 2.0 yards per play.
It could have been worse. Christian Gonzalez saved two touchdowns with diving pass breakups and Craig Woodson played the half of his life with seven tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage.
Neither team turned the ball over.
