- Sycamores fall to Redbirds 17-10
Indiana State's football team fell 17-10 in Missouri Valley Football Conference action at Illinois State's Hancock Stadium on Saturday.
A second-quarter pick-six ultimately killed the early momentum as the Redbirds, ranked 10th in the Football Championship Subdivision, were able to build a 10-point lead going into halftime.
"Unfortunately, we were a little loose with the ball at times, but we'll get those things corrected," Indiana State coach Curt Mallory said.
Mallory said the Sycamores have been in these types of games with Illinois State before.
"Just have to keep battling," Mallory said. "We did that against North Dakota, we did that today. That's how the Missouri Valley is going to be and I thought our team never flinched and just kept going."
The game started out with defensive stops forcing punts for both sides before Indiana State got on the scoreboard with a touchdown pass from Brady Allen to Jayden Reed.
With the Redbirds driving on the following possession, the Sycamore defense held them to a field goal to make it 7-3. But the home team took the lead 10-7 early in the second quarter with a 3-yard rush by Victor Dawson and made it 17-7 on Key Crowell's interception return.
Neither side could get anything going in the third quarter. Mallory attributed that to strong defenses on both sides.
Indiana State cut the deficit down in the fourth when Sebastian Lopez knocked through a 23-yard field goal after the Sycamore offense was prevented from getting into the end zone despite multiple chances in the red zone. That field goal pulled the Sycamores within seven with 7:47 remaining.
With about three minutes left, Allen threw as he was getting sacked with Keshon Singleton hauling it in for 22 yards at the Illinois State 36-yard line. The play went to review but was upheld much to the unhappiness of the Redbird faithful. But that drive came up short as the Sycamores were unable to convert on fourth down, and they never got the ball back.
Terre Haute South graduate Nic Yatsko had two interceptions. Yatsko said from the film, the Sycamores knew what the Redbirds were going to do offensively but seeing it in person in a couple of plays helped them about the same amount.
