Syracuse sophomore forward Tyler Betsey plans to enter the Transfer Portal . On3’s Joe Tiptonreported the news. He is seeking his third program in as many seasons.

In his lone season at Syracuse, Overton averaged 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.4 assists for a team that missed the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. Betsey made a stop at Cincinnati under Wes Miller before landing at Syracusethis past season.

Betsey scored in double figures in nine games for the Orange this season. That includes a season-high 18-point showing in Syracuse‘s 94-86 win over Florida State on Jan. 13. He also scored 15 points in Syracuse’s 86-69 loss to SMU in the ACC Tournament.

The sophomore forward hits the Portal as Syracusebasketball heads into a new era. After two seasons at the helm, head coach Adrian Autry and the program parted ways. This season, the Orange posted a 15-17 (6-12) record and failed to punch their ticket to the Big Dance. Across two seasons, Autry led the program to a 49-48 (24-34) record with no NCAA Tournament appearances.

Syracuse is heading into new era under head coach Gerry McNamara

To replace English, Syracusequickly agreed to terms on a deal with Siena head coach and Syracusealum Gerry McNamara . Across two seasons at Siena, McNamara led the Saints to a 37-30 (22-18) record and an appearance in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The Saints, a No. 16 seed, had No. 1 seed Duke on the ropes in the First Round before ultimately falling 71-65.

“I love this place,” McNamara said in a release . “I love what Syracusemeans: to the fans, to the players who have worn this jersey, to the people of Central New York. This program has given me everything, and I am ready to give everything back to it.

“College basketball has changed. How you build a program, recruit talent, compete for resources and win looks different than it did even five years ago. I know that. I’m ready for it. What hasn’t changed is what Orange Nation expects, and what this place deserves. We are going to build something special here .”

The Scranton, PA native rose to prominence as a member of Syracuse‘s National Championship team in 2003. Across four seasons, McNamara was named a three-time All-Big East selection and has his No. 3 jersey retired for the program. He was a member of Syracuse‘s coaching staff from 2009-2024 before taking over at Siena.

Syracuseis desperately seeking a turnaround under McNamara, as it has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2021. Tyler Betsey, however, will not be sticking around for the rebuild.
