- The Tangled 2 Sides Of The Darius Acuff Jr. Coin In Sacramento

The game of basketball revolves around whether to pass or to shoot on any given play. A rookie is continuing to choose the latter more often than not, and the public now has an unusual dilemma on its hands about Darius Acuff Jr.'s true impact. This volatile performance will likely leave Sacramento fans and the NBA itself to debate whether the coin is worth the gamble. On a more serious matter outside of public opinion, a report comes from a disgruntled veteran in the Sacramento Kings locker room.
Basketball philosophy is being put to the test as the ultra-high usage rate/hero style of play is generally reserved for at least borderline All-NBA talent. Acuff Jr. is amid his first six NBA starts and has taken a staggering 144 shots with a usage rate of 32.3%. For reference , the only players who have played at least five games with a higher usage rate include offensive engines. Some examples are Luka Doncic (40.0%), Brandon Miller (34.0%), Victor Wembanyama (33.8%), Stephen Curry (33.2%), and Jayson Tatum (33.1%).

At first glance, Acuff Jr.'s stats do indeed jump off the box score, as he is averaging 26.3 ppg. This mark is the sixth highest by any player in the first six games of their career since the 1981-1982 season. The only catch is the top five players had an average FG% of 51.5%. That 51.5% figure is proficient enough to give a multitude of players the green light in an offense when paired with a 26 PPG and up average. This is where we begin the second side of the coin that is Acuff Jr., as his current FG% through six games is at 39.6%.
One of the most important factors in the Acuff Jr. paradox is how the Sacramento Kings themselves respond to his style of play. Domantas Sabonis was quoted saying :
"Move the ball. Get me the ball more so I can swing it and get guys open. You know, we took a lot of one-pass shots, pick-and-roll shots without passing the ball; you know, those numbers are really high, and I feel like we're best when we kind of mix it up – point guard shoots, point guard hits the corner, point guard hits me, then I can make the read – that's where I'm best at."
Since voicing his frustration, Sabonis has reportedly already requested a trade from Sacramento in this fresh NBA season. Sabonis has been a key cog in what little Sacramento had for a foundation, raising an important question. With evident growing pains on the horizon, in the short term, is the Acuff Jr. situation going to be two steps forward, one step back, or vice versa?
Although Sabonis is an established veteran in the NBA, who is to say his opinion should be accepted as completely negative on the matter? With Acuff Jr.'s 14-assist performance against the Pelicans on 10/29, his team impact could definitely go beyond the shot chart. With his ability to work within Sabonis's preferred offensive operation being brought into question, his playmaking is a crucial point of emphasis. All eyes will be on Acuff's facilitation ability with his high shot diet to prove there is just one side to his coin, and it is beneficial.

The Sacramento Kings themselves also need to be taken into consideration before any rational opinions are made. Although Acuff Jr. is intruding upon the laws of team basketball as a rookie, the Kings desperately need to develop a new face of the franchise. Finding your face of the franchise in the NBA is essentially required nowadays, with all the heliocentric offensive weapons in today's NBA. As a rookie in this lackluster Kings franchise, this may likely be the best path to success for Sacramento and Acuff Jr. alike. Where will Sacramento land when Acuff Jr.'s coin is done flipping?
Ever since the departure of De'Aaron Fox and the 2023 first round playoff exit in a seven game series against the Warriors, it's been an uphill battle for Sacramento. With no real foundation or playoff success in the last two decades, betting on potential has it's benefits. Between the mishandling of Tyrese Haliburton tenure and not finding a way to make it work with De'Aaron Fox , there is extra pressure to find that franchise cornerstone.
Should Sacramento rein in the rookie to minimize mistakes, or roll the dice and see if operating through him is the key to success? Struggling from the field is to be expected with someone this new to the NBA, so expect to see progress in that department as well. From the perspective of a Kings fan, I could understand them not just being content with Acuff's performance, but feeling genuine joy instead.
