Freshman edge rusher Tariq Boney has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting young talents on the Michigan football roster. Hailing from Washington, D.C., where he starred at St. John's College High School and earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the District of Columbia, Boney arrived in Ann Arbor with plenty of high school pedigree. However, his rapid ascension during training camp and into the fall has turned him into a household name for Michigan fans.
Standing at 6-1 inch and weighing 243 pounds, Boney put together a dominant high school resume. That disruptive play translating immediately to the collegiate level has caught the attention of the coaching staff. Following a quiet start to the year where he saw limited action through the first two games, Boney made his presence felt in a major way during Michigan's matchup against UTEP, erupting for four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.

He did not slow down once conference play arrived, adding another crucial sack the following week against Iowa. His explosive first step and relentless motor have allowed him to carve out a meaningful role in the defensive rotation alongside fellow standout freshman Carter Meadows. Head coach Kyle Whittingham specifically highlighted Boney's immense upside during media availability, pointing to the young edge defender as a cornerstone piece with a massive future ahead.
Beyond the raw stats, advanced metrics highlight just how efficient Boney has been in limited action. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of Michigan's highest-rated defenders overall through the first five games of the season, reflecting his rare knack for collapsing the pocket and shedding edge blocks. His impact on situational pass-rushing downs has forced opposing offensive coordinators to account for his whereabouts, even when taking fewer than 20 snaps per contest.
His sudden emergence gives the Wolverines an invaluable rotational pass rusher capable of generating instant pressure on third-and-long situations. That rapid growth has allowed the defensive coaching staff to keep the starting edge rushers fresh late in games without sacrificing setting the edge against heavy run schemes.
National analysts have also taken notice of Boney's stellar impact, with outlets like ESPN ranking him among the top freshmen in the country. What makes his trajectory even more impressive is how quickly he has adapted to the physical demands of Big Ten football. While opponents will undoubtedly look for ways to account for him as the schedule progresses, Boney's early-season breakout proves he is ready to be a foundational building block for Jay Hill's dominant defense.
