Everton head into Thursday night's game on the back of three matches without a win.
Saturday's 2-0 defeat away at Arsenal came a week after the 2-0 home loss to Chelsea , and it's seen the Toffees drop to 11th in the Premier League table. The unbeaten start to the season feels a long time ago now.
Since the 1-0 win over Ipswich , Everton have drawn with Hull and lost to both Chelsea and Arsenal. That's just two wins from eight league games this season.
Newcastle visit Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday and the two sides meet again in the Premier League a few days later. It's a big week for David Moyes and his squad .
Tarkowski on Everton's form
Speaking to Everton's official website ahead of the game, captain James Tarkowski admitted that the players need to find a way out of this run themselves . He also insisted the mood around the squad remains positive, despite the defeat at the Emirates.
"We've got to demand [we don't feel sorry for ourselves]."
Tarkowski also touched on the size of the squad, something we've spoken about plenty this season. With so few senior players available, he made the point that it's down to the players who are there to deliver, and that they're getting plenty of minutes as a result.
"The squad is small, so it's only us who can go out on that pitch and play. It's good for the lads because you know you're going to get plenty of minutes at the moment. "
It's an honest assessment. Everton finished the summer window with one senior striker after Folarin Balogun pulled out of his move, and Moyes has had very little room to rotate. When injuries hit, the gaps show quickly.
The flip side is that there are players at the club who aren't getting those minutes. Hayden Hackney and Tyler Dibling have barely featured , and with Newcastle twice in a matter of days, this feels like the week to use them. If the squad is small, Everton can't afford to leave half of it on the bench.
Results needed
Tarkowski was clear that Everton need to start picking up results, and he described the Newcastle tie as a big game the squad is looking forward to.
"We need to start picking up results.
"Even though we won against Ipswich, it feels, not like a slump, but it feels like we need to work our way out of this.
"It's a big game on Thursday in the cup that we're looking forward to."
The Carabao Cup gives Everton something different to aim for. It's been a long time since this club got close to a trophy, and a cup run would change the mood around the place quickly.
Newcastle won't be easy opponents, but this is a game Everton have to treat as a priority. A win on Thursday would give the players a lift heading into the league meeting a few days later, and some of the confidence that's been missing over the last three games.
Tarkowski has made his demand clear. Now it's on the players to back it up on the pitch.
